Friends and Neighbours
King’s Church is serving those in need in our local communities in practical ways during the current disruption.
We have expanded aspects of our well-established Sherburn Road Friends and Neighbours scheme to other parts of the City of Durham and its surrounding communities.
These areas include: Sherburn Road, Gilesgate, Framwellgate Moor and Newton Hall. But we will gladly serve you beyond these areas. Just ask.
- Shop for food for those who cannot go out
- Everywhere in the Durham City area
- Offer telephone befriending for those who are isolated
- In the Sherburn Road and Gilesgate areas.
- Offer food parcels or arrange delivery of a meal if you are in serious need
- Everywhere in the Durham City area. This is in conjunction with our friends at REfUSE and Handcrafted
Referral information is below.
How can I help? If you would like to volunteer to help in your street or local area or you would like to make a gift to resource our CV19 work then phone Sam 07401342729 or email email@example.com. Our office number for other enquiries is 0191 384 2018 where you can leave a message and we will get back to you. All gifts are ring fenced to resource the work outlined on this page and none are used for any other church activities.
Shopping (on behalf of those that can’t!)
This service is for people who are able to buy their own shopping, but practically just can’t get to the shops to do so.
Perhaps you’re in self-isolation, or perhaps the family, friends and neighbours that would normally help you are in self-isolation themselves. We can go shopping on your behalf and deliver everything you need to your home.
All our volunteers have been trained, have DBS checks, wear photo ID and will keep a safe distance.
We are primarily working in:
- Sherburn Road
- Framwellgate Moor
- Newton Hall
- …but can also help in other areas of the city too.
To find out more or to apply for help please call 07759092362 (Sherburn Road/Gilesgate) or 07401342729 (Framwellgate, Newton Hall or other) or complete the secure referral form. You can refer yourself or (with their consent) a family member, a neighbour, or anyone else who you know is in need.
We know that loneliness is a serious issue at this time, especially for those who are elderly or isolated and so we offer telephone befriending in Sherburn Road and Gilesgate. This is part of Sherburn Road Friends and Neighbours; an established befriending scheme ran in partnership with Linking Lives UK. Residents are matched to a trained volunteer who will offer regular support, companionship and conversation over the phone. They can also offer signposting and shopping support when needed. To find out more call 07759092362 or complete the secure referral form.
Free Food Parcels (REfUSE café, Handcrafted & the Achor Community)
Our friends at ReFuse and Handcrafted have joined forces to offer a free food delivery service to those who are in serious need. This is either a daily pre-cooked meal (that needs re-heating) or a food parcel (that would need you to transform it into a meal!).
If you are in need of food and would like to know what other options are available, this website lists your options: https://refusedurham.org.uk/2020/03/31/what-to-do-if-you-need-food/
There are lots of other organisations that are also helping at this time. The best way to find contact details is by checking this website: https://www.durhamlocate.org.uk/
